10 Years Together

Travis & Sara

I love it when everything comes together perfectly.

When stars align, and it feels like there wasn’t ever a moment that the special ending wouldn’t happen just so.

This time around, however, I have to admit that the path was a little more complicated. Travis and Sara met in college in Denver, Colorado 10 years ago, and were doing what a lot of couples do; busying themselves with the complexities of day-to-day life.

Travis and Sara . . .

. . . live in the midwest and like a lot of people who live in the middle of the country, the early heat of summertime had them looking forward to the Utah wedding of close friends. Any college age couple who spend 10 years together are going to have the opportunity to attend weddings and it’s impossible for those celebrations to not serve as a tiny reminder to those still unhitched.

Meanwhile at home in the midwest, it just kept getting hotter.

With a summer wedding to attend, Travis and Sara decided that it was a perfect opportunity to visit Telluride, the one small Colorado town that they’d always wanted to experience. Telluride is a special place. Situated at 8750, at the end of a beautiful box canyon, it really must be seen to be believed. As a lifestyle photographer jointly based in California, and Colorado, it’s right here in my backyard.

I’ve spent 15 years living part time in the rustic mountain town of Ridgway, Colorado.

30 minutes down the road from Telluride and famous for its blend of ranchers, world-class athletes, and increasingly, tuned-in young couples eager to escape to the Western slope of Colorado.

I spend a lot of my time outdoors. Surfing and road biking in California, and hiking and mountain biking in Colorado.

In between, I work with couples and families as a documentary style photographer. I also shoot a lot of weddings, both in Colorado and California.

Because of that familiarity with Telluride, I knew the exact spot that Travis was talking about when he reached out to me with a place he had in mind for photos. He had a little romantic surprise of his own. Travis decided that it was time to start participating in the summer wedding festivities in a more personal way and had already proposed to Sara and wanted to capture the last few days before their ceremony high in the mountains.

The couple was staying in a cute AirBnB in downtown Telluride and days after these photos were taken, they had the ceremony and celebration there.

Although Telluride in the summertime isn’t exactly the quietest place on earth, I think the photos that I took of the new married couple are a perfect reflection of what the day looked and felt like.

As to the synchronicity that I mentioned in the first sentence, it turns out that Sara had always thought that Telluride would be the perfect place to be married. After 10 years together, and on the way to yet one more of their friends’ weddings, it was their time to be the ones placing rings on each other’s fingers.
