Surprise Propsal, Telluride Colorado

Matthew & Allegra

A surprise trip to the beautiful high-mountain town of Telluride is all by itself cause for excitement, but Matthew had another more romantic surprise in store for his girlfriend.

Coming from the midwest, A few months ago, Colorado’s snow-capped mountains, and glacier-cold streams created the backdrop for a very special engagement photography session.

Matthew had contacted me for help with his plan. He wanted to know of a perfect place, high above a small mountain town that felt both far away, and would also offer a romantic (more civilized) setting to celebrate a hoped for “yes.”

As a Colorado lifestyle photographer

. . . having a deep understanding of the mountain west is a requirement. To be honest, it’s also the result of my lifestyle itself. As a skier, hiker, cyclist and rock climber, the outdoors is my playground. Still, it’s always satisfying to be able to point clients in the right direction. In this case, Telluride was an easy choice.  At 8750 feet high, and situated at the end of an almost impossibly scenic box canyon, Telluride feels like the whole town has been photoshopped. A cute main street is dotted with amazing restaurants that range from eclectic farm-to-table, and elegant French, to hipster coffee shops. There’s something for everyone.

The town park is famous for having one of the most scenic,

And accessible camping areas anywhere in the world. It’s a short five minute walk from downtown. All summer long it’s also home to festivals such as the Telluride Bluegrass, and Blues and Brews music extravaganzas.

But, Matthew was here to propose. At the top of Bear Creek Canyon, just uphill from the Telluride town park lies one of the most amazing spots for any kind of adventure outdoor photography. I was happy that I had spent the early spring trail running, because I was tasked with running (ok, mostly walking) ahead to get into position.

When, an hour later (from my hiding spot) I saw Matthew and Allegra rounding the last curve, just below the falls, I was excited, but also felt a little sense of relief. After all, the weather was perfect. It’s high enough above town that there were only a few other hikers in the general area.

On one knee, Matthew must have quickly received the answer he was hoping for because almost immediately,

Allegra was wrapped in his arms. As you can see from the photographs, they’re off to a good start.

Since I split my time between California and Colorado, I’m constantly bouncing from a Southern California Wedding, to Aspen, Telluride, or Vail for a family, or couples’ lifestyle photography session. To be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The few negatives, including living occasionally out of boxes, is more than made up for with days like this one that I was able to spend with this lucky couple.
